About the Author Julia Donaldson was born in Hampstead, London and studied French and Drama at Bristol University. Whilst at university she would write songs and plays and perform them in the street with her friends. By 1971 she got a job at a publishing house whilst being an active part of Bristol Street theatre at the weekends, where the group would regularly perform in playgrounds in underprivileged housing estates. To this day Donaldson continues to write children's books ever since The Gruffalo was first published in 1999. While a lot of her books are available in the majority of bookshops, she has a lot of books aimed at school use including Julia Donaldson’s Songbird Phonics and her Time to Read Collection.
