The Chardonnay grape variety was introduced to South Tyrol as early as 1835 on the initiative of Archduke Johann of Habsburg. It was later taken up by the founder of the first Italian technical oenological institute, which promoted its widespread diffusion. Originally known as 'yellow' Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay was rediscovered in a big way by South Tyrolean winegrowers in the 1980s.
